Standup Comedy is a tough act to follow. It’s normally short, a fast-paced sequence of humorous stories, short jokes, and one-liners, which comprise what is typically called a monologue, routine or act. Sometimes variety of other objects, trick or even music can be use to enhance their act. It’s usually performed live on stage where the audience can boo or uncontrollably laugh without a director yelling cut or holding an applause sign .

A lot of times it is the way the Standup Comics saying it and their expression that makes the audience laugh rather than what they say. Just look at the old classic Jim Carrey on his Unnatural Act “Well, Good evening ladies and gentleman, my name is Jim Carrey how are you this evening, all ready then” . There is nothing funny about that sentence, but if you are one of his audiences you can bet your bottom dollar that you will be laughing your funny bones off.

Standup Comedy can also be classified as the hardest form of public speaking. With politicians and other type of public speakers, the audience is usually content to talk among themselves, write a letter to a newspaper the next day or even blogging about it. With Standup Comedy, the audience is almost always give a real time feed back. Bored audience my harras the Standup Comedian by shouting or yelling at them, or as known as heckling.

What separates the average comics and true performers is the ability to not only face back the heckler but also to win over the audience by using witty comeback and hit the heckler on the right spot. Some of the masters are even letting the heckler down gently.

The other thing that makes Standup Comedy are even harder is the fact that they cannot continue without the audience. Other musical act or theater performances expect the audience enthusiasts as well, but they are generally able to continue even if the audience is not paying any attention at all.
