Baby Sold to buy Mobile Phone
A young Chinese couple from the Chongqing Municipality have reportedly sold their newborn baby for 2,500 yuan ($366) and then used the money to buy a new mobile phone.
The shocking story from the Chongqing Economic times reported that the baby’s 19 year old mother, Zhang Yao, met her 21 year old boyfriend, Xin, through the internet. Young love flourished and Zhang was soon pregnant, giving birth to a healthy baby girl in November.
The couple believed that they wouldn’t be able to afford to raise the child and so, only six days after the baby was born, they sold the little girl to a man who gave his name as Li Yong.
A police investigation revealed that the child’s parents, Zhang and Xin, spent most of their time on the internet and neither were employed. Their parents were not inclined to give them any support and so they had decided to sell their baby.
Both are reported to regret having sold their baby and the mother, Zhang, told police that, after the baby was sold, she kept crying and that she now wants to raise a child. The child’s father, Xin, has asked police if could retrieve the child from the welfare center where she is currently being looked after.
Welfare center staff have said that the baby is well behaved, has a healthy appetite and is not frightened by strangers.
Police in the Longsha district have said that they are planning to reunite the family and they hope to return the baby girl to her parents very soon.
Police are currently considering whether anyone can be held criminally responsible as the selling of children is a criminal offence.
This shocking story from China is just the latest in which a very young couple have found themselves facing parenthood without planning or any means of supporting their child.
